Jozani Forest

In the south of the Island, Jozani Forest is a wonder and a delight, with tales of Zanzibar leopards, medicinal cures and stunning scenery.

The forest is home to a number of endemic species, including the Zanzibar Red Colobus monkey. The mangrove boardwalk takes you above the swamp, where, depending on the tide, you can see tropical fish flitting between the mangrove roots and crab scuttling across the mud.

Jozani Forest presently protects an estimate of 1000 Kirks red colobus monkeys and other mammal species including duikers, bush babies, African civets and Sykes monkeys among others.

Jozani Forest is also one of the Important Birding Areas (IBAs) on Zanzibar Archipelago. Jozani Forest itself shelters over 40 bird species including the Little green bull, African goshawk, Fischer’s Turaco, Mangrove kingfishers, Somber greenbul, Zanzibar red bishops, East coast Akalat, Mouse-colored sun birds, Crowned hornbill, Olive sun birds etc.
